What is massachusetts state flag?

The Massachusetts state flag features a white field upon which is centered a blue shield.

  • The Massachusetts%20Shield depicts an Indigenous American figure, dressed in a shirt and moccasins, holding a bow and arrow pointing downwards. This symbolizes peace. A white star is present above and to the right of the figure.

  • The Crest above the shield features an arm holding a broadsword, representing the motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty).

The flag has undergone several modifications since its adoption in 1776. The current design was officially adopted in 1971.
